Harrison Gilman

Harrison Gilman was born in Los Angeles and raised in Santa Barbara. In 2018, he graduated from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts with a BFA in Filmmaking and a minor in Art History. During his time at NYU, Gilman became disenchanted with filmmaking at large scale and found a creative outlet in making art. Sketchbooks evolved into large scale canvases nailed to a bedroom wall. Gilman was soon accepted into his first group show and began to receive commission requests. By the time he graduated, Harrison Gilman had committed to becoming a painter.

Gilman’s work was first displayed in the 2018 We Rise Art Fair in Los Angeles. His first solo show was in 2019 at Galerie Tangerine in Nashville, TN. Since then, Gilman has had multiple solo shows and various group shows, as well as a series of live painting events.

Harrison Gilman’s paintings are conjured from the subconcious. The process begins with a trance-like state of gestural abstraction. Some paintings remain in this stage, while for others, it is a foundation from which he can extract a composition of shapes, symbols, and characters that create an experience like looking at clouds. Often combining the abstract and the real, the outcome becomes an amalgamation of mid-century modernism, geometric figuration, primitive art, and cartoons.
